Shocking but true, a new survey has revealed that customers who don’t pay their energy bills by monthly direct debit are losing out on a collective £33.5million worth of supplier discounts. Yes, all those people who don’t make energy bills payments by direct debit are collectively responsible for losing out on as large as £33.5million worth of supplier discounts. The cause behind it is that more and more people have started using another modes of payment which actually work against them. As per new uSwitch.com survey, 7.3% drop has been registered in the payment mode. The users opt to pay their bills by different modes instead of direct debit. The fact was really surprising. To be precise, till last year 92% users chose to pay their energy bills by direct debit but now the number has come down to 85.3% only. The interesting part is that the this mode of payment ensures more benefits and discounts to the users. It not only saves your hard-earned money but also makes sure that you take home the maximum advantage.
To make the users more informed about the payment mode, Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com highlights the fact in the most simple manner. He emphasizes on the fact that the direct debit guarantees easiest and the cheapest energy prices in the market. He focuses on the advantages that one gets while making payments through direct debit. He wants more and more users to go for this mode of payment.
Not only this, the results of the survey suggest that if the trend goes on like this then it is estimated that around 3,42,000 more households are keen to do away with the direct debit which will result in the combined loss of £33.5million in billing discounts. As far as number of those users are concerned who pay their bills by direct debit amounts to 40% only. According to a consumer watchdog, decline is registered because five of the big six energy suppliers were charging more than the needed. But the fact is that the if you pay your bills through direct debit, then, suppliers offer discounts and all. Regular meter readings is the most convenient way to get it done. Apart from this, there is another survey by Bacs, the organisation responsible for managing direct debit payments, shows rise in the number of users who pay their bills by direct debit by 3.75%. But whatever the case is, this mode of payment allows you to keep a check on your electricity usage and correct meter readings make the process all the more easier.

The reason to rejoice for internet users like me is there, thanks to Orange mobile broadband that started offering unlimited overnight downloads. Besides offering, set monthly download allowance, users also get unlimited off-peak downloads between midnight and 9am. The newly launched plan starts from as low as £12.72 a month for a 3GB monthly allowance and goes up to £27.40 a month for 10GB besides offering £17.62 for 5GB value for money deal. It usually comes with a 12 month contract and the accessory provided with it is a mobile broadband dongle. In addition to this, the users can get more data in bundles like 1GB, 3GB, 5GB or 10GB with price £5 that goes up to £20 for an extra 10GB.
Quite interestingly, the Orange is the first provider to offer such type of download allowances. Usually , mobile broadband packages offer less download allowances than fixed-line connections. This is launched keeping in view, customers often exceed their limit. With this package, users can download overnight without breaking into precious monthly allowance. According to the Phillips, Orange is the charging around £10 less than its rivals for 1GB.

A research conducted on consumers like me gave a shocking response as it revealed that £33.5million is collectively loosen when the energy bills by monthly direct debit are not paid. According to the survey conducted by uSwitch.com, there is a 7.3 percent decrease in number of energy switchers opting to pay their gas and electricity bills by direct debit. The director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com said that paying by direct debit opens the path to the cheapest energy prices in the market - this is not something to give up without a fight. Compared to payment of 92 percent people using this mode of payment previous year, it is only 85.3 percent this year. If trend continues, 342,000 households may ditch direct debits this year. The industry regulator in one of the statement said 40% of households in the UK opt to pay their bills by direct debit. It was also stated that the companies were charging unnecessary high direct debit payments. Not only this, they are profiting from the interest as well due to which energy suppliers came under fire and made hue and cry in the beginning of the year. The industry regulator suggested to obstruct barriers on unreasonable gas and electricity direct debits and remove this before winter comes into place.
Chris Eagle, commercial manager at Energychoices.co.uk cautions users by saying that it proves to be cheaper for the user to sign a contract with the providers, until and unless its usage or prices rise. In the case of price rise, user bears the heat of the debt with the supplier. There is less risk of falling into debt, if the user takes regular meter readings and also present them in front of their respective suppliers.
But the figures from Bacs revealed different facts as it has said the number of customers choosing to pay in this way has risen by 3.75%.

The popular tariff of British Gas changed and British Gas launched WebSaver 4 which is the cheapest online dual fuel available in the present scenario of the market. Earlier it was popular as WebSaver 3 which is now replaced by WebSaver 4. First of all basic terminology should be understood so that better understanding can be gathered regarding the topic. Therefore understanding dual fuel and standard fuel resemble great importance. The dual fuel simply means that gas and electricity is provided by the same supplier and the benefit it accrues to its users is that the users can get heavy discounts and rebates which helps to save the money of the user. The standard tariff plan is a plan that levies charge on the provider for each day the user is attached to the provider to have maintained supply of the fuel.
The mind boggling savings of £134 compared to the standard tariff are also waiting for users if they switch over to online tariff. The sure shot discounts of up to 6 percent are also valid which are till 30 November 2010. The benefits of dual fuel is attributed to both new and existing consumers. The features provided in online dual fuel are paperless bills and online account management. When the payment is done through ‘my monthly direct debit’ then it additional discounts are provided.
uSwitch.com still prefers EDF to be the cheapest but due to the restriction of its availability in only 10 out of 14 distribution areas, all the users cant benefit themselves. When the Energy Online v5 tariff from EDF costs £983 a year, British Gas costs £994 a year for their gas and electricity. The clients will be required to pay charge of £30 per fuel if they they switch over to WebSaver 4 before 28 February 2010.
Chris Eagle, commercial manager, Energychoices.co.uk says it will be quite interesting to see from now on that how the other energy suppliers react to WebSaver 4 as it probably entitles the more variety of the plans. The Eagle cautions the people to check the online tariffs before coming to any conclusion. British Gas launches WebSaver 4 which will probably break all the records of sales in times to come.
